SALT CHLORINATION FOR SWIMMING POOLS
Posted by C² Multimedia on January 6, 2010
The buzz in the pool industry the past couple of years has been about salt chlorination. Handling and transporting chlorine is one big pain for the do-it-yourself pool owners. Imagine never having to deal with those yellow containers again. Chlorine as used in swimming pools contains caustic soda. This is the abrasive chemical in chlorine that makes your skin itch and your eyes turn red. Salt chlorinated pools eliminate the caustics and make the water much more inviting. Your skin won’t get itchy and your red bathing suit will not turn pink. Best of all, it is much safer for children with sensitive skin or eyes.

Salt chlorination is not new, but it is well improved. More and more companies are getting involved with this technology, thus saturating the industry with new names and products claiming to be the best. As a consumer it is hard to know for sure which product is right for your pool. You can research all you want; there is just not enough factual information out there about the performance of the units. All you will find is a bunch of companies telling you why their technology is the best.
One big misconception about salt systems is that you don’t need any other chemicals. This is untrue. The salt system will produce the chlorine, but the pool still needs conditioner, alkalinity and calcium. Salt systems use a low percentage of salt in the pool so the water does not taste salty. The pool will not become a saltwater pool; it will just be salt chlorinated. Price is the other question with these units. Years ago salt systems were quite expensive, but they have dropped in price due to the competition in the industry.
So how do you know what salt system is best for you? Simple, call a pool professional. Someone who has been in the industry a while and understands the good and bad of all the products in the market. This way you can make a rational decision between a couple of units depending on your pool’s needs.
